Before Time Kindergarten
Is it mandatory that my daughter should go to pre-school before starting her Kindergarten?
My daughter is 3 and half yr old and she is home with me. Should I send her to pre-school for a yr before she starts her KG in Sep 2010 ?
She learned her uppercase letters, numbers 1-20 , names of animals, brids, colors etc. She is doing really well with sentences and vocabulary. I take her to library and all seasonal activities. She watches a little too many DORA vidoes though, but they are very informative. I am not against sending her to pre-school but I like to keep her home with me. I enjoy my time with her.

I'm an early education major, whether or not preschool would be beneficial is a very case by case scenario. Like someone said earlier, in disadvantaged homes preschool is better because the children are unable to develop the skills they need to succeed in kindergarten, such as phonemic awareness.
However, Studies show that children who are exposed to more positive, instructional parental attention have higher IQ's. By kindergarten they recommend children are able to sight read at least 10 letters of the alphabet. Your daughter can already read all the uppercase letters so she's in excellent shape!
Even though she's probably not actually reading yet, it's important to make sure she's on level before reaching kindergarten. At the preschool level that means developing Phonemic awareness - "discerning that spoken language is composed of phonemes" or recognizing that individual words are composed of individual sounds.
It sounds complicated but if you read to her often she's probably already proficient in this area. The best way to develop this is with nursery rhymes because of the alliteration and rhyme schemes.
If you and your daughter are bonding and learning together that is fantastic! A lot of parents struggle for that relationship. In your case it sounds like it would be much better for her to stay at home. As you're spending time with her and teaching her these things, you are unintentionally teaching her a lot more. Doing this shows her how much you value her education, she'll pick up on your attitudes about reading & other subjects, but most important it shows her how much you value your time together.
In kindergarten she should still be able to pick up all the social skills she needs and staying home for preschool won't damage that. However if you're still concerned be aware there are many other social opportunities for her. Sunday school, little league sports, play dates with friends, cousins, and siblings can all provide wonderful social instruction. You could even send her to preschool for just an hour a day or just one day a week if you wanted.
