Will I loose all my spousal benefits if I divorce my disabled vietnam veteran husband?
We have been common law married for the last 20 years. We haven't lived together for 15 years because of the abuse. We have children together, but there is no sense in staying together. He wants companionship but I worry about our safety. What will I loose by being an ex spouse? I am just now applying for benefits that I didn't know we were eligable for and my son is now 17 but he is disabled as well. Our local Veterans Service center doesn't give a hoot about the spouse of a veteran. They he just told me last year about an apportionment that my husband has been collecting for the past 17 years.
By being an ex you lose a lot of benefits including his social security benefits. Your son may still be eligible though.
