Is the Hawaiian language worth learning?
I am planning on going to Grad school in the near future in Hawaii and I was wondering if I should learn a little of the language through language software. I know pretty much all Hawaiians these days speak English but the language sounds really nice when spoken. Is it worth it? It has also been difficult to find computer software such as "Instant Immersion" to begin learning the language, where can I find a language software that teaches Hawaiian? Thanks for all of your helpful responses.
Well, I'm of the opinion that there's no such thing as a language that "isn't worth learning". Having said that, it depends on your motives and priorities. Meaning, if the idea is to use it in a professional context, there's probably little point in studying Hawaiian for anyone who doesn't plan on teaching it. However, if you're hoping to simply be able to communicate with people who speak it, why not? I'm sure the effort on your part, not to mention the respect for the local cultural heritage, would be appreciated, and you might actually experience some memorable conversations that would otherwise elude you.
