Do Dr. Seuss' books describe a journey into madness?
I read the Cat and the Hat and I can't help but see how the is a personification of the deepest and most disturbing offices of the human psyche. Or how green eggs and hams talks about a man who is struggling to control a subconscious desire to slip into self-destruction. Or hop on pop discusses the fear of fatherhood. What do you think?
I think you're reading too much into it. Dr. Seuss deliberately wrote those books using simple words, and only a small variety of words, so that even children who had just recently learned to read would be able to complete and understand the books all by themselves.
I must admit that the repetition of the same words over and over again gives the books a bit of an obsessive undertone, but that's an unintended side effect of keeping the vocabularly list to a minimum.
