Switched Schoolhouse Math
I need adviced about Switched on schoolhouse Language.?
I have been using A Beka with my boys but since I have a 2 year old and 6 month old now, I just don't have the time for that right now! I have bought Teaching Textbooks for math but was looking into Switched on Schoolhouse for language but I don't know anyone who has used it. I would only be using it for my oldest son who would be taking the grade four language. Any advice would be great!
We used ABeka from K-4 through 2nd grade with my oldest and K-4 through K-5 with my youngest son. It was a great curriculum but I am so glad that we made the switch to Switched on Schoolhouse for Grade 3. ABeka becomes much more cumbersome for the teacher and time consuming for the student in older grades. SOS makes learning much more fun and the learning games are real motivating than workbooks or even LifePacs. And the perks for mom is the icing on the cake. No more teacher keys. No more lesson plans, or record keeping and the program grades about 90% of the work for you.
I have used Switched on Schoolhouse with both my children since third grade. My oldest is a senior and will graduate on June 3. My second is a freshman. It is an excellent curriculum and I highly recommend it. I fell the Language Arts program is excellent. Both my children have become proficient writers using SOS. The history is very engaging. Our Favorite year in History was grade 4, Which was a combination of geography with a history of each place we "visited" in our trip around the world. Science is also great. The video clips are very helpful, and Stanley the scientist makes the experiments fun.
And you really don't have to worry about handwriting. You can always provide written work for your students. Most SOS users make their students take notes to help the learn the skill for future education as well as it is a great way to help the students study. You can purchasing a handwriting curriculum (Horizons is great for grades K-6) They can do their projects in handwriting as well as practice their spelling words by hand.
You made a great decision with Teaching Textbooks, too. It is actually better IMO than SOS. If you haven't purchased yet, I'd recommend waiting for the April sale. Each year AOP offers their annual 20% off sale. And that that is when the newest version of SOS is released.
If you plan on using SOS, I'd highly recommend you join the SOS yahoo support group. There you can connect with lots of experienced users who can offer great advice and help.

Another hint is to set yourself up as a student and play around with the curriculum. There are so many features and the best way to learn and help your new SOS student is get to know it before they begin their school work.
