Grade Reading Phonics
I need help with the right approach to my son's principal. He is 7 and in 2nd grade. Title one reading since K?
I have always felt that the title one was not helping him but holding him back on purpose. I have him in Kumon also this year. They say he has comprehension and phonics problems. After the second quarter I called a conference with his school work getting better and they slammed me with wanting him to repeat the 2nd grade and are failing him( due to test scores) his work is 80's - 100's. His Math and spelling he has B's in. His kumon Teacher doesn't see a problem. He needs a passing grade to move on to the 3rd grade. He had an F (one point less than a D) then a D and then an F again. I don't know how to approach this without causing any further problems. I do know they ARE about keeping the funding know matter what! Any suggestions?
First thing, read aloud to your son EVERY night, follow along with your finger so he gets his sight vocab down. Try the "Russell" books by Johanna Hurwitz, they're great. Kumon and Title 1 won't do for comprehension and exposure to print what read-aloud will do.
Thing 2: Go into a meeting with the principal and teacher assuring him/her that you are on the same page, that you just want the child to succeed and this performance doesn't reflect well on anybody. What you want is to come up with a specific plan to help your child meet the standards, because what's been happening in class is obviously not effective. Tell them that you have him in Kumon and are implementing a regular regiment of read-aloud, and what else are you supposed to do as a parent? Then, if I were you, I'd ask to see some AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS, in other words, something besides stupid standardized test scores, samples of your child's REAL WORK. Ask to have described to you the lesson plans that prefaced the work. This will underscore that you expect accountability on all sides. If all that your kid's doing is worksheets, it's no surprise he's not progressing at school. Don't leave the school without a plan, and an appointment to meet again and review the progress. If there is still no change, I'd ask for a different teacher.
Also: some kids are just coming into their own in reading when they are 7. Don't stress too much.
