I am trying to get into the IT world what is the best way to get networking certifications?
I am a new comer into the IT world and I am trying to get my foot into the door. I was looking at getting online video's to do some quick training crom CBT Nuggets, I was told that they were good. I was first at looking getting my CCNA first and then working on A+ or Microsoft. I was trying to get some advise on how do I start doing this and would online traing be best? I know you can go to school for it but then you have to sit in a classroom and... well, I want to do it faster then that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Presumably, you are willing to spend time and money to get various networking certificates, in order to get a job in network support. That's great, and many have, before you, taken just such a road.
But, once you get a job like that, the questions and problems don't have multiple choice answers. Day One, you could be asked to configure a new Cisco router, or expected to help rollout a new messaging system. So, you had better be able to do the job, if you get the job, or you won't keep the job.
That's why certificate factories have a bad rep in the IT business. Originally, they started out as an attempt by major software and hardware vendors to standardize training for their products, and certify competency for those who learned the theory and practice of those products, and how to use them. But, in too many cases, people wanted to "do it faster then that." They did a minimum of rote memorization, enough to pass a certificate test, and on the strength of that, got hired as a network technician. Unfortunately, most of these "paper network engineers" started screwing up Day One, because they'd never held a coil of ThinNet coax, and didn't know how to insert a network drop in a legacy ring topology network. Or, they didn't know how to punch down a CAT5 station run on a 110 block. Etc., etc.
Don't be one of those guys. Get real training.
IT certs don't mean much these days, to the hiring managers in many organizations. They're just checklist items for HR folks to filter resumes. Every Buzzword Billy has his resume up on monster.com now. But the guys who can run a network, for real, don't spend much time updating their resumes, because they are busy working. Not looking for work. Work finds them.
Join some User Groups for commercial IT products in your area, to learn what people are really doing with technology. See if you can intern at quality companies, while you go to class in a real school. Volunteer to help build or maintain small networks for non-profit groups in your community.
